The verdict: axe in the main slot, hammer in the side slot.

Control: Resonant hands out its weapons through the main story: three main weapon forms and three side weapon forms, with Dylan choosing one of each. Since every choice sticks until you actively change it, this page settles the question of which forms deserve the slots — and how to go about changing your mind later.

The verdict

  • Best main weapon: Broad Axe
  • Best side weapon: Heavy Hammer

The reasoning is straightforward. The Broad Axe is a powerful all-rounder that brings both damage and speed, and its backstab damage bonus is constantly relevant because attacks from behind come up often. The Heavy Hammer piles on stagger damage and knocks opponents into a stunned state over and over, letting Dylan keep hammering with almost no risk in return. Put together and played well, the pair produces excellent damage.

Main weapon ranking

Rank Weapon In short
1 Broad Axe The all-rounder, much like a longsword in a fantasy game. Neither speed nor power is lacking, and back attacks deal extra damage — rewarding the dodge-heavy approach the game already encourages.
2 Swift Daggers Twin daggers that trade damage for speed, with a 30% critical hit rate. Even with the Axe slightly ahead, they stay a very reliable choice for singling out one opponent, hitting fast while staying mobile.
3 Whip Staff A scythe-style weapon with wide sweeps that hit multiple enemies and knock them back. Highest damage of the three main forms, but slow and tricky to use move by move. Ideal against crowds of weak enemies — a job Dylan's later abilities handle anyway, which is what keeps it in third.

Side weapon ranking

All three side forms can be chosen within the game's first hour, right after Dylan first leaves the Oldest House.

Rank Weapon In short
1 Heavy Hammer A giant hammer with massive damage and enormous stagger buildup, whose charge is less sluggish than expected. Many enemies crumple into a stunned state, opening long hammer strings they can barely escape — and the stagger usually means the combo closes with an execution.
2 Extension A sweeping whip with the lowest damage of the three side forms but the most flexibility, striking several opponents at once. Its charge attack plants Dylan in place and demands precise timing, though faster-paced players may still click with it.
3 Drill A thrusting spear that dashes at opponents. Quick out of the gate, but its later attacks need slower strings to pay off — the clumsiest of the three, though it may suit precise hits on weak points.

Side forms: the hammer's stagger is hard to argue with.

How weapons unlock

  • Your first choice is free: the game grants one main mutation form and one side mutation form when you first pick.
  • The other four forms must be purchased from the hub area of the Dream Hollow.
  • Those purchases need a rare currency, obtainable from merchants or as rewards for certain main story missions.

Changing forms at any time

Weapon forms are never locked in. Pause the game, open the loadout menu, and swap the main or side weapon freely — the only limit is that a form must already be unlocked. Alternatively, a respec can be used to move into different forms. For the full comparison of every form, see the weapon tier list.
